New hospitals taking shape

First AHU switch on at The Royal London, only 167 to go

AHU Number 58 feeds 220 rooms, supplying air through 222 grills. Only 167 more AHUs to commission with their associated 38,640 grills.

Another milestone in the construction of The Royal London Hospital was reached in May, with the switching on and running of the first Air Handling Unit (AHU).   This formed part of the early benchmark commissioning and is the first of the 168 AHUs switched on within this 17 storey 142,000m3 building.  AHUs condition and circulate air as part of the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning system.

Mervyn Lowe, Project Director of The Royal London said:  “This is the culmination of five-years work, from early conception to today’s switch on.  It is true credit to the team’s endeavour.”

Counting down to the move

Construction continues to make good progress for the new hospitals at both The Royal London and Barts, with internal fitting out under way.

In just over a year’s time, many wards and departments at Barts will be packing up their boxes and getting ready to relocate into the new hospital building on Little Britain. Move managers have been selected for each of the teams that will be making the move. They will be the key point of liaison with the New Hospitals Team and work with them to plan the details for each area.

Pre-move arrangements will cover planning which furniture and equipment will be included in the move, and which will need to be decommissioned. There will be several opportunities for people to get rid of clutter before the move and the Information Governance Team is on hand to advise on which paper records need to be retained, which should be archived and how to dispose safely of the rest.

The move into the new hospital building will also have an impact on the way people work and the New Hospitals Team is organising site visits to give them a sense of how their new work area will be laid out, which will help them think through how differently they might need to work.

“The experience from other moves is that the earlier people start their preparations, the easier it is to make the move,” said Mark Viner. “Although some things can’t be done right now, they can certainly be planned.”
