Advance projects
Before work began on the main redevelopment project, Barts and The London completed three 'advance' schemes, listed below.

New Pathology and Pharmacy building at The Royal London
The £58 million, five-storey Pathology and Pharmacy building at The Royal London opened in early 2006. It consolidates Barts and The London's pharmacy and pathology services - previously located in 14 different locations - improving efficiency and allowing us to provide services for patients across a much wider area in north east
The building boasts the largest automated testing laboratory in the NHS and a robotic drug dispenser.
A light installation commissioned by Vital Arts, the Trust’s arts project, from local artist Martin Richman, illuminates the stairwell of the new building.
Barts and The London Breast Care Centre, West Wing, Barts
The 18th-century grade-I listed West Wing opened to patients as the new Barts and The London Breast Care Centre in September 2004. It co-locates all our hospitals' breast care diagnostic and screening services in a patient-centred environment, combining state-of-the-art digital mammography technology with the work of leading contemporary British artists and sympathetic interior design – all within the restored grade-I listed building.
Kenton and Lucas Wing, Barts
The grade-II listed Kenton and Lucas Wing, built in the 1840s, opened fully to patients during summer 2004. It now houses the Barts Sexual Health Service, Barts and The London Centre for Reproductive Medicine and the integrated rehabilitation unit for Barts. Each service has a discrete entrance.
As well as improving staff morale, patients have also commented on how relaxed and professional the atmosphere is in the new centre. Together, these factors contribute to a more successful patient experience, in terms both of reduced stress and improved treatment.
