Services in the new hospital

The move into the new hospital means that many clinical teams and departments are brought together for the first time, providing more integrated patient services.

The hospital contains 727 inpatient beds and 26 theatres, which will be split between specialist and general use. It also provides room for us to expand in the longer term into the space on floors 14 and 15, which are currently unallocated.

Key services in the new building include:

Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre – ground floor

Located on the ground floor, the Emergency Department, for children and adults, is accessed from the north end of Milward Street. The department is three times bigger than the Accident and Emergency Department in the old hospital, with a full range of services dedicated to the care of emergency and trauma patients. This includes lifts linking it directly to the helipad for London’s Air Ambulance.

The department is equipped with a dedicated imaging facility which includes three x-ray rooms, an ultrasound suite and two state-of-the-art CT scanners. This is in addition to the main imaging departments on the first and second floor.

Opening hours:

  • 24 hours / 7 days a week

The Urgent Care Centre is part of the Emergency Department and is open seven days a week, 12noon - 10pm. The centre will see patients with minor injuries and illnesses, after assessment within A&E. This assessment will be by a GP, Emergency Nurse Practitioner, or hospital doctor. Prior to this, patients will be assessed to see whether their care is more appropriately provided by their local GP.

Physiotherapy and dressing clinic services previously provided by the old Whitechapel Walk-in Centre, will be provided through the Trust’s community health services. The GP out of hours service is also based in the Urgent Care Centre and will be by appointment only. After liaising with the relevant on-call team, local GPs and out of hours doctors can direct patients to the Acute Admissions Unit (formerly the Medical Admissions Unit), the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) and the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU).

The Whitechapel Walk-in Centre building closed on 14 December 2011.

Community walk-in clinics are available at:

The Trust’s Minor Injuries Unit at Barts Hospital is unaffected by these changes.

Acute Admissions Unit (AAU) – eleventh floor

Previously the Medical Admissions Unit, the AAU is a 48-hour short stay medical unit that accepts direct medical referrals from GPs and medically referred patients from the Emergency Department. The unit consists of 78 beds to include eight GP assessment spaces and eight Level 1a beds.

Adult Critical Care Unit (ACCU) – fourth floor

Adult critical care services are co-located on the fourth floor (4E and 4F). In total, from April 2012, we will have 44 beds across our intensive care and high dependency units.

Day case and short stay unit (ACAD) – third floor

Day case and short stay unit (ACAD) is a short-stay unit located on the third floor for elective surgical day case patients and those needing admission for up to 48 hours. The provision of the dedicated ACAD is an important part of the Trust’s strategy for treating patients in separate areas based on acuity and length of stay.

Children’s Hospital – sixth, seventh and eighth floors

The Children’s Hospital is co-located with the Women’s Centre on the sixth, seventh and eighth floors. The hospital brings together all children’s outpatient and inpatient activity (including theatres) allowing us to separate children from the general hospital population.

All of the wards have spaces for parents to stay on bed settees. The hospital also features a play area and there are plans for a children’s garden.

Imaging – first and second floors

Imaging is located on the first and second floors, with a dedicated area for outpatients (on the second floor) and a separate children’s area.

Outpatient services – second floor  and other floors for specialist outpatients services

Most outpatient services in the new hospital are located on the second floor, with a number of specialist outpatient departments on other floors in the new building – as shown in the table below: Other Royal London outpatient services remain in the existing Outpatients Department on Stepney Way.

Renal and Urology – ninth floor

The renal and urology service is located on the ninth floor. The service – one of the biggest in Europe – includes:

  • Haemodialysis centre, with 70 dialysis stations
  • Outpatient department for both renal and urology
  • Two inpatient renal and urology wards (9E and 9F).

Theatres

Located across the fourth and sixth floors there will be 26 theatres, including 11 general theatres and dedicated obstetric and paediatric theatres.

Therapy services – eleventh floor (adult inpatients), second floor (adult outpatients) and seventh floor (children’s inpatient and outpatient)

Inpatient adult therapy services are located on the 11th floor. The service includes dieticians, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Outpatient therapies are located on the second floor.

The children’s therapy services are based on the seventh floor and see both inpatients and outpatients within the Children’s Hospital.

Wards (adult inpatient) – floors 10-14

Most adult inpatient wards are located on floors 10-14 in the new building – with the exception of the renal and urology wards, which are on the ninth floor.

Opening hours:

Most wards are open to visitors from 3pm-4.30pm and from 7pm-8.30pm. In special circumstances, visitors may be admitted at additional times.

Women’s Centre – sixth and eighth floors

The Women’s Centre is located on the sixth and eighth floors. The centre includes gynaecology, maternity and obstetric services (including theatres). The centre allows these specialist women’s services to be separated from the general hospital population.

Maternity

Outpatient and inpatient maternity services are located in the Women’s Centre, including the outpatients clinic and maternity and labour wards (6E and 6F). These wards have been designed to provide a spacious, homely environment. There is one fixed birthing pool and a number of mobile pools for water births.

Patient services in the new building

Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)

PALS moved to the second floor in January 2012 and offers a free confidential service for patients, their families and carers. This includes providing information and advice about NHS services, helping to deal with concerns around the services the hospital provides and ensuring feedback is used to improve Trust services.

For more information, please contact PALS on Pals@bartsandthelondon.nhs.uk.

Additional patient services – including the bereavement office and a multi-faith centre – are also available on the second floor.
