Moving into the new Royal London Hospital

Moves into the new Royal London Hospital continue

Moves into the new state-of-the-art hospital at The Royal London continued over the Christmas and New Year period.

In total more than 3,000 staff members will relocate into the new hospital from Barts hospital and buildings across The Royal London site.

The first moves  took place on 6 December 2011 and further moves will continue until 28 February 2012 - view the hospital move timetable.

The new hospital at The Royal London will be fully open on 1 March 2012 and a series of arts and community involvement events will be held during this month.

Which services have already moved into the new building (as at 1 February 2012)

  • Adult medical wards
  • Adult theatres
  • Day case and short stay unit (ACAD)
  • Emergency Department, including the Urgent Care Centre and London’s Air Ambulance
  • Endoscopy
  • Haematology Day Unit
  • Imaging
  • Inpatient Pharmacy
  • Ophthalmology
  • Outpatients – including Dermatology, Cardiac and ECG, the Fracture Clinic, Lung Function, Neurophysiology and Therapies

Multi-faith Chaplaincy and Patient Support Services

On 26th January the multi-faith chaplaincy opened in the heart of the new building. The multi-faith chaplaincy provides a space for patients, visitors and staff who wish to pray or seek a quiet space for reflection. It includes:

  • Sanctuary
  • Jewish community room
  • Male and female Muslim prayer rooms

Patient support will be located next to the multi-faith chaplaincy area and will include cashiers and fares, bereavement office and Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS).  

Barts phase two

At Barts, demolition of Horder Wing and the Back Block of the original King George V (KGV) Building was completed in August 2011. Construction of the second half of the new hospital, a cardic centre of excellence, is now underway. Foundations have been laid and the structure of the building is now  becoming visable. The centre will open in autumn 2014.
