The new hospital at The Royal London
The new hospital at The Royal London

Staff at the world-renowned hospitals of Barts and The Royal London will soon care for patients in an environment that reflects the quality of their clinical care. The new hospitals programme is replacing many of the current ageing buildings with state-of-the-art healthcare facilities.

The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel will be home to a range of specialist centres, including London's leading trauma and emergency care centre, one of Europe’s largest renal services and a dedicated Women’s Centre and Children’s Hospital.

The first half of the new hospital at Barts, Britain's oldest hospital, has already been completed and houses one of the most advanced cancer centres in Europe. The second half of the building will accommodate a cardiac centre of excellence.

Construction at both hospitals started in May 2006 after final approval of the scheme by the Department of Health. While the first half of the new building at Barts is now open, the first services will move into the new hospital at The Royal London in December 2011.

Construction is taking place in three main phases at each hospital. The whole development is due to be complete by early 2016.
