Barts and The London Centre for Neurosciences
Clinical outcomes
Barts and The London Centre for Neurosciences was one of the first hospitals in the UK to begin using neurostimulation – a technique used to relieve pain and counteract the symptoms of conditions like Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy. Over 150 patients with epilepsy have now been treated using vagal nerve stimulation – some patients are now seizure free and there have been improvements in over 60% of cases.
The use of spinal cord stimulation to counteract pain is also successful at the centre. It has been used in over 300 patients, 60% with reporting pain relief where all other approaches have failed.
The centre was also one of the first hospitals to begin using kyphoplasty – a non-invasive procedure used to treat patients with damage to their spines. We are now well established as a leader in this field, having treated over 300 patients to date. More than 93% of patients have reported immediate pain relief, where all other attempts to control pain had failed.
Low rates of infection
Barts and The London continues to have relatively low rates of infection, including rates of the ‘superbug’ MRSA. Figures released by the Department of Health in 2006 confirm that we have the fourth lowest rate among the specialist hospitals in London.
