About Barts and The London Centre for Neurosciences
We are based at The Royal London Hospital.
Here at the centre, we use advanced treatments and facilities to treat and support patients with neurological conditions affecting their brain, spinal cord and/or nerves.
We are one of only two NHS facilities to provide gamma knife treatment to treat NHS patients. This provides non-invasive treatment for many types of brain tumour, blood vessel disorders of the brain and areas of new development such as epilepsy and facial pain. Patients who receive gamma knife treatment recover rapidly, and can often be treated as day cases or stay just 24 hours in hospital.
The centre was one of the first hospitals to begin using advanced techniques such as kyphoplasty to treat spinal damage and neurostimulation which relieves pain and counteract the symptoms of conditions like Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy. We now have the biggest neurostimulation unit in Europe.
Leading specialists
The high concentration of complex cases we see means that we have some of Britain’s leading specialists on our team . Their expertise benefits all of our patients, including those coming in for more routine procedures. Our teaching hospital status means that we have a higher proportion of doctors and nurses to patients than non-teaching hospitals.
Advanced technology and treatments
As a large teaching and specialist hospital we are continually pushing the boundaries of medical research to ensure that we are able to provide the most advanced and successful technologies and treatments.
We have a state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanner, one of the first in the country, which provides a fast and comprehensive service to patients. It is used to build up pictures of any part of the body and produce detailed 3-D images of, for example, the head and neck.
Seamless service
We ensure that patients and their carers are kept fully informed at each stage of patient care. Critical to the quality of our service is teamwork; our patients experience a multi-disciplinary and seamless approach – receiving medical and surgical treatment, high quality nursing care and therapeutic support, which is proven to speed up the recovery process.
