Our clinical outcomes
Barts and The London hospitals produce some of the best clinical outcomes in the UK - evidenced by one of the best survival rate records in the NHS.
Our maternity service has met the Local Supervising Authority Standards for midwifery supervision in full for the past three years. The obstetric/diabetes team was highly commended in the Barts and The London ‘Celebrating Success, Excellence in Teamwork’ award in 2006. The clinic was particularly praised for ‘working across hospital and community boundaries’.
The diabetic obstetric service was excellent when compared with national data in the 2005 CEMACH report (Confidential Enquiry into Maternal And Child Health). The audit found that the preterm delivery rate was 12% (31-36 weeks) which compares favourably with the CEMACH figure of 36%, and only 8% of babies were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) compared with 55% in the CEMACH report.

Healthcare Commission Maternity Services Review Jan 2008
The Healthcare Commission’s review of maternity services in England identified a range of key areas for improvement at Barts and The London (as with other hospitals around the country). These recommendations had already been identified by our own review conducted in partnership with Tower Hamlets PCT, and changes to improve our maternity service are well underway. We believe that women using our maternity service should always be treated with respect and kindness, cared for in a clean environment and given all the information they need.
Safety
We constantly strive to ensure the well-being of women and their babies in our care, and we have a good safety record. Our staff are encouraged and helped to report problems and incidents regarding care and safety so we can make recommendations for improvement.
In 2007, our maternity service was pleased to be awarded a Level 2 status by the NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) which assesses maternity units against a set of risk management standards. We ensure that we have safe systems in place, that our staff are well trained and that we have evidence-based clinical guidance that staff can easily access through our internal website. We audit our clinical care against national guidance such as CEMACH and NICE, and always strive to make improvements.
