Bringing Excellence to Life

Myocardial disease

Myocardial disease – sometimes known as cardiomyopathy – is a disease of the heart muscle. We treat the following forms of myocardial disease:

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

This is when the heart muscle thickens, and is most often caused by a genetic abnormality.

Dilated cardiomyopathy

This is when the heart becomes enlarged, which makes the heart muscle weaker and it’s ability to pump blood around the body is reduced. As the blood is not pumped efficiently, this can lead to breathlessness and a build up of fluid in the lungs known as pulmonary oedema.  An enlarged or dilated heart can also be caused by persistent high blood pressure, coronary heart disease and valvular heart disease.

At Barts and The London Heart Surgery Centre we treat hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy by surgically removing or remodelling the thickened or enlarged section of the heart wall.
