Pathology open day

28 October 2009

Fans of tv series such as Waking The Dead can find out more about their real life counterparts at Barts and The London NHS Trust

For the second year running, the Trust is holding a special, open afternoon devoted to pathology – the science of determining the causes and effects of disease.

Visitors will get the chance to find out how pathologists diagnose common life-threatening diseases.

They will discover, for example, what happens to an appendix once it’s been removed and sent off to the Pathology Laboratory for tests; what you need to know about skin cancer and how to prevent it;  the best way to avoid Swine Flu and what the effect of smoking is on the lungs.

The event has proven a big attraction for local schools, keen to access the wide range of health education material on offer.

There will also be experts, including pathologists, laboratory scientists and students, available to answer visitors’ questions.

Youngsters will also get the chance to visit the recently opened Centre of the Cell.

The event takes place on Wednesday 4 November between 2.00 and 4.30pm in the Old Library, Garrod Building, Barts and The London
