Computer virus latest information
1 December 2008
Barts and The London NHS Trust is now fully operational following an incident two weeks ago when a computer virus infected the computer systems. The computer network has been stabilised and the Trust’s 5,000 PCs have been screened and are clear of the virus.
As soon as the scale of the issue was apparent, the Trust activated its well-rehearsed emergency procedures to ensure that key clinical systems continued while network access was being established.
Throughout the incident the Trust maintained a safe environment for patients and theatres and outpatients clinics remained operational. No urgent operations were cancelled, and the very small number of operations which were postponed have been rescheduled.
Contrary to some reports, there is no evidence to suggest that the Trust was targeted as part of a malicious attack and there has been no unauthorised access to patient information. An investigation into how the computer system became infected is ongoing.
