No smoking policy

No smoking

The Trust’s no smoking policy applies to all staff, patients and visitors on all Trust premises – both inside and outside. No smoking is permitted in any Trust buildings, entrances and hospital grounds – including the gardens at The Royal London and The London Chest hospitals and The Square at Barts.

The policy complies with national guidance on smoke-free environments in hospitals, supports the Trust’s commitment to reduce the risks of smoking for everyone and reflects public support highlighted in a Mori opinion poll, which found that 96% of people want smoking to be banned in NHS hospitals. As well as the many diseases associated with smoking that affect smokers themselves, the British Medical Association estimates that at least 11,000 people die in the UK each year as a result of passive smoking.

Free stop smoking service for patients

The Trust provides advice and support to help staff and inpatients who wish to give up smoking, including free stop smoking clinics at both The Royal London Hospital and Barts.
