Barts and The London Eye Service
This clinic is based at The Royal London Hospital and provides assessment and treatment for adult patients who are referred to the eye service with strabismus (squint), diplopia (double vision) and neurological related eye (neuro-ophthalmic) problems.
Patients who are referred by assessment of strabismus (squint) will be seen by the orthoptists and the consultant.
The orthoptist will assess the patient’s vision, perform tests to assess for strabismus, the function of the muscles moving the eyes, the patient’s double vision, and assess binocular single vision (use of both eyes together).
The orthoptist will determine if there are any non-surgical treatments that can be provided. The consultant will examine the eye and discuss the short-term and long-term management of the condition with the patient, and organise any extra investigations that may be necessary.
Patients referred for neuro-ophthalmic problems span a wide range of conditions, from acute vision loss to visual field defects, and abnormal pupils to post trauma problems.
A number of these problems reach the eye service by being referred through the neurology or endocrinology service.
A neuro-ophthalmic eye examination will include checking the patient’s vision, pupil reactions, colour vision and examination of the structures inside the eye. Extra tests such as visual field assessment, orthoptic assessment, fluorescein angiogram or photographs may be required to aid your diagnosis.
Patients may also be referred to other services within the trust for management of the underlying cause of their eye problems.
