Barts and The London Eye Service
The medical retina service operates clinics at both The Royal London and Barts Hospitals.
This service assesses and treats patients with diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration and other less common diseases of the retina.
On every visit, every patient attending the clinic will have their pupils dilated (temporarily enlarged) – this is necessary so that the doctor whom you are seeing can examine the retina thoroughly.
It can take several hours for the vision to return to normal and you should not drive or operate machinery until this is the case. Diabetic patients will also have their blood sugar levels and blood pressure tested by a nurse.
As part of your investigation, your doctor may request for a fluorescein angiogram to be conducted, or ask for photos of your eyes to be taken.
These tests will help the doctor determine the severity of your eye disease and will help them decide whether treatment is necessary and how best to manage your condition.
Some patients will require laser treatment to prevent their retinal disease from worsening – please click here for more information.
