Barts and The London Eye Service
Barts and The London Eye Service is based at two of our hospitals; the renowned Royal London Hospital at Whitechapel in east London, and St Bartholomew’s Hospital (known as Barts) in the City of London.
We provide both routine and specialist eye care services for patients with a wide range of eye diseases and visual problems.
We treat patients of all ages and provide a comprehensive 24-hour service to the local community.
The Eye Service is a multi-disciplinary team who ensure all patients receive the best care possible. The team consists of Ophthalmologists, Orthoptists, Optometrists, Nurses, Medical Photographers and a dispensing optician.
The eye is a complex structure and different eye conditions require different types of assessment and treatment.
As such, our clinics are sub-specialised to ensure that when you attend your appointment you are seen by a consultant who is highly trained in that particular area of eye care, and have access to other department staff and tests to accurately assess, diagnose and then manage your eye condition.
The centre is part of the North East Thames Ophthalmic Network and has specialist expertise in a wide range of subspecialties.
Leading eye cancer service
Our service is one of the country’s leading services for the assessment and treatment of eye cancers. We are the only UK service that manages both adults and childrens eye cancers, accepting referrals from all over the United Kingdom.
Last year 1500 patients were assessed by the Eye Cancer Service, including 300 new referrals.
We use some of the most advanced treatments and facilities to treat and support patients with all types of eye cancer – the most common types of eye cancers that we treat are ocular melanoma in adults and retinoblastoma in children.
In fact we are one of only two centres in the country, and the only centre in the south of england that can screen for, diagnose and treat retinoblastoma.
