Next Medicine for Members event – Thursday 26 November 2009

Following the ongoing success of our previous events, we are organising our next Medicine for Members event and would like to invite you attend. Its theme will be safety, and the measures we take every day in our hospitals to ensure the safety of patients, staff and others.

Highlights will include

• a demonstration on a life-size manikin of how we prepare our doctors to manage a range of medical conditions and scenarios, and the
• chance to test how clean your hands are, an important factor in preventing the spread of infection.

There will be a chance to ask questions, although please note that our doctors will be unable to answer questions about individual health issues – if you require this type of advice, please speak to your own GP or hospital doctor.

An additional attraction will be the opportunity to explore the microscopic world inside our bodies, on a free tour of the new Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry’s Centre of the Cell science education centre.

The centre, housed in a futuristic orange cell-shaped ‘pod,’ is suspended above biomedical research laboratories, allowing visitors to look down on the scientists at work below. Once inside, you will gather around a central ‘nucleus’ for an audiovisual display, projected around the walls of the pod, which introduces cells. The nucleus opens to reveal touch-table games: you can try your hand at virtual experiments and have your cells counted. You also get to see real parts of the body and diagnose cancer using high-power microscopes.

All of the scientific content in Centre of the Cell is based on the cutting-edge medical research going on at the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Venue: Perrin Lecture Theatre, on the ground floor of the Medical School’s Blizard Building at 4 Newark Street, The Royal London Hospital, London E1 2AT. 

Time: 6pm start, it will end by 7.15pm and refreshments will be available afterwards. The tours of the Centre of the Cell will be offered before the main event at 5pm and afterwards at 7.15pm.
