Prosthodontics is part of restorative dentistry, which aims to restore teeth to their normal form, function and appearance.

Prosthodontics deals with restoration of teeth. This can be either fixed (cannot be taken out of the mouth) or removable where a denture is used.

  • Fixed
Fixed restorations include veneers (partial covering of teeth), crowns (caps) and bridges (fixed in false teeth). There are two types of bridges, stick-on (resin bonded) or conventional. One of the advantages of stick-on bridges is that they are non destructive of the teeth either side where as conventional bridges require tooth preparation (teeth to be filed down).

A newer way of replacing teeth is using dental implants, a metal screw made of titanium which is surgically inserted into the jaw and may be used to support a false fixed tooth, or even a whole set of teeth.
  • Removable
Removable teeth can be a complete set of dentures or just a few known as partial dentures.
