Periodontitis

Periodontitis results in destruction of the gum tissue and ligaments that connect teeth to the bone - this may eventually lead to tooth loss.  Individuals who are at risk of periodontitis are those who:

• do not brush their teeth effectively
• smoke
• have medical conditions such as diabetes
• have a family history of periodontitis

Levels of periodontitis also increase with age and this is irreversible.

Treatment at Barts and The London Dental Hospital is aimed at reducing the rate at which the disease progresses with the aim of keeping teeth for longer.
