Bringing Excellence to Life

Children’s dentistry

Our children’s dentistry service is divided into two sections:

Children who require dental treatment under general anaesthesia
Local dentists may refer children to our dental hospital for treatment. Our young patients who are treated under general anaesthesia come from a vast catchment area including north east London, Essex and East Anglia. Tooth extractions, prior to orthodontic treatment, are the most common reason for children requiring general anaesthesia and treatment plans are developed to avoid the risk of repeat general anaesthesia.  Where possible, follow-up treatment is usually carried out by your child’s local dental practitioner.

Children with complicated medical conditions
Children with complicated medical conditions and special needs are given careful treatment and care - both as outpatients and under general anaesthesia - to ensure they are kept safe and well during all dental procedures.

We provide dental care for children diagnosed with medical conditions such as leukaemia, AIDS, haemophilia and cystic fibrosis and we also provide dental treatment for organ transplant patients.  Children with autism and behavioural problems are also referred to us.

We provide dental care for children with complex dental health conditions, such as children who are born with missing adult teeth known as hypodontia, dental trauma, tooth structural defects, severe dental erosion and early onset gum (periodontal) disease.

Children with other medical conditions may also be considered for dental treatment.  These include children with severe asthma, uncontrolled epilepsy, cardiac abnormalities and insulin dependent diabetes. Some children with severe anxiety or dental phobia may also benefit from our service.
