Investigation and treatment of retinoblastoma

Retinoblastoma is a rare eye cancer that affects infants and young children. Barts and The London is a designated centre for the treatment and genetic screening of this condition and is one of only two centres in the country and is the only centre in the south of England to offer this facility.

It is usually detected by parents who notice an unusual colour in their child’s eye(s) when photographs are taken. This photograph shows an abnormal red reflex in a child's eye, which may indicate a problem.

If your GP suspects that your child may have retinoblastoma they will make an urgent referral to the hospital to see one of our specialists.

In addition to diagnosis and treatment for retinoblastoma, we also provide a genetic screening unit at The Royal London Hospital. This provides a service for patients and their relatives to find out if any of your other family members may be at risk of this condition.

The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust is a charity that provides information and support to families living with retinoblastoma.
