Barts and The London Children's Eye Service
Low rates of infection
Barts and The London hospitals continue to have relatively low rates of infection, including rates of the ‘superbug’ MRSA. Figures released by the Department of Health in 2006 confirm that we have the fourth lowest rate among the specialist hospitals in London.
Fast access
All patients that require an outpatient appointment with the Children’s Eye Service are seen within 4 weeks. In addition to this all children that are seen in the Accident and Emergency Department are reviewed by the Children’s Eye Service.
Number of patients treated
The Children’s Eye Service treats around 3000 children each year.
Excellent screening services
We have only one of two facilities in the country which provides genetic screening for patients and their relatives for retinoblastoma, a childhood eye cancer.
We also screen 95% of premature babies born at the hospital for retinopathy of prematurity - a high level of screening. We are one of only a few units to audit our level of screening for retinopathy of prematurity and to take measures to improve it dramatically.
Excellent services for elective surgery and day case patients
Barts and The London Children’s Hospital is in the top 25% of NHS hospitals in England providing child services, rated as ‘good’ by a Healthcare Commission review in 2006. Our facilities for day case patients and our elective surgery were rated as ‘excellent’. The review examined the treatment of children in child specific and child friendly environments and the provision of sufficient staff trained in to care for children.
