Trust Board

The Trust Board is accountable for setting the strategic direction of the Trust, monitoring performance against objectives, ensuring high standards of corporate governance and helping to promote links between the Trust and the local community.

The Board has 12 members – the Chairman, the Chief Executive, four full-time executive directors and six part-time non-executive directors. There are currently two vacancies.


Chairman

Keith Palmer, Chairman Dr Keith Palmer
Chairman

Keith Palmer joined Barts and The London as Chairman in June 2007. He was previously a Non-Executive Director at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Palmer holds a number of other appointments. He is Non-Executive Vice Chairman of N M Rothschild & Sons Ltd, a major UK-based investment bank; part-time Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Dundee; a Senior Fellow of the King's Fund; Trustee and Treasurer of Cancer Research UK; and Chairman of Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, a public private partnership supporting infrastructure development in Africa.  He is also a Non-Executive Director of IVIMEDS, an international collaboration to improve health education worldwide, and a former Chair of Action Health, a charity promoting improved public health in the developing world. 

Chief Executive

Chief Executive

Peter Morris joined Barts and The London NHS Trust as Interim Chief Executive on 30 March 2009 and was appointed substantively to the role in October 2009. Prior to joining Barts and The London, he was Chief Executive of University Hospitals South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM) from 2002. He joined the NHS in 1979 and has held key leadership positions in hospitals in Kent, Sussex, Leicester, Cardiff and Sheffield and was Chief Executive at Ipswich Hospitals NHS Trust. He was awarded an OBE in 2008 for services to healthcare.

Non-Executive Directors

John Adshead, Non-Executive Director Mr John Adshead
Non-executive Director and Vice Chairman

John Adshead has a degree in Economics and Politics from Exeter University and a MBA from Cranfield School of Management. He has spent his career in commerce and industry, starting as a graduate trainee in industrial relations at the Ford Motor Company in 1968. He joined the Bank of America in 1976 and became Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Information Technology and Administration for Europe, Middle East and Africa. He joined J Sainsbury plc in 1989, where he was Group Human Resources and Information Technology Director until 2004.

Mary Elford, Non-Executive Director Ms Mary Elford
Non-executive Director

Mary Elford has been a Non Executive Director of the Trust since March 2002 and chairs the Board’s Quality Assurance Committee. She is a Council member of Queen Mary, University of London and a non-executive director of Camidoc, which delivers out-of-hours healthcare services to five London boroughs. She is a member of the National Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards and the Department of Health’s Urgent and Emergency Care Governing Board.  Mary is also a trustee of the Camden Society, which provides services for people with learning disabilities across London. Until recently she was Foundation Director of the London North East Community Foundation. Mary’s background is in retail, having worked for the John Lewis Partnership for 15 years holding a number of senior positions.  She has a degree in modern history from the University of Oxford and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. 

Professor Nick Wright, Non-Executive Director Professor Nick Wright

Professor Nick Wright is currently Warden of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and Vice Principal of Queen Mary, University of London. Professor Wright studied Medicine at Durham University and went on to train in Histopathology at Newcastle and Oxford universities gaining his PhD in 1975. He is the Head of the Histopathology Unit at Cancer Research (UK) Ltd, President of the British Society of Gastroenterology and President of the Royal Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Ian Harrison - Non- executive Director Mr Ian Harrison
Non-executive Director

Ian Harrison is currently a Director of the London Investment Banking Association (LIBA) - the principal UK trade association for investment banks and securities houses - where he is responsible for Taxation and Accounting matters. Previously he was Company Secretary and Group Financial Controller at Courtaulds plc, and he has also held a number of senior positions at Unilever plc, including Head of the Computing and Communications Group. He has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford and has attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. In addition, he has a number of community roles including as a school governor.

Abdal Ullah Mr Abdal Ullah
Non-executive Director

Abdal Ullah was appointed as a Non Executive Director of the Trust from 1 July 2009.  He has been a member of the Council of Queen Mary University of London since 2003.  He is currently Vice-Chair of the local Further Education College and a former member of the Education Commission with the Association of London Government.  He has extensive experience with a number of London’s strategic bodies and is a former member of the London Metropolitan Police Authority and Chair of the City of London Police Independent Advisory Committee.  He is currently a Trustee of Thames Water Trust. He was the convenor of the Home Office task group for Muslim youth in the aftermath of the 7 July 2005 London bomb attacks, has extensive involvement with many London voluntary organisations and is a trustee of the Centre of the Cell Ltd.  Currently an elected local authority councillor with cabinet responsibility for Policing, Transport and Environment, Abdal Ullah’s professional career experience includes working for one of the UK’s top consulting firm, where he worked across government departments on various projects, and working in the health, education and community development sectors.

Executive Directors

Charles Gutteridge, Medical Director Dr Charles Gutteridge
Medical Director

Charles Gutteridge is the Trust's Medical Director, and has been since January 2002. He trained at Cambridge University and The London Hospital Medical College.  He has worked in east London for many years, initially as a doctor in training and then as a consultant haematologist at Newham Healthcare Trust where he was also Medical Director.  He maintains his interest in medical research and education through his position as a Senior Lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Andrew Holden, Interim Director of Finance Mr Andrew Holden
Director of Finance and Investment

Andrew began his career at Thames Water as a trainee accountant where he held a number of posts before moving into local government. He worked at the London Borough of Newham for five years, qualifying as an accountant, before joining the NHS in 1990 as a Finance Manager at University College Hospital London. He became Finance Director at a Community Trust in 1998 before being promoted to Finance Director at St Mary's NHS Trust 2001. He has held the position of Interim Director of Finance and Investment at Barts and the London since October 2007.

Kay Riley Ms Kay Riley
Chief Nurse - Healthcare Governance

Kay began her NHS career in Nottingham, training as a nurse at the Nottingham School of Nursing, and held a number of nursing, then senior management positions at Queens Medical Centre, and Nottingham City Hospital over a period of 15 years. Kay then moved to the Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Trust initially as Deputy Director of Nursing, and then Acting Director of Nursing. In 2003, Kay moved to Southampton University Hospitals Trust initially as Associate Director of Nursing with a lead for modernisation, and then as Acting Director of Nursing, before taking up the post of Director of Nursing at Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare Trust for 3 years.
