City and Hackney Exhibition

This online exhibition tells the story of seven of the hospitals that used to make up the City & Hackney health district. The district was led by St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and as the other hospitals closed many of their records were transferred to Barts, where they are now held by St Bartholomew’s Hospital Archives. Thanks to generous funding from The Pilgrim Trust/Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Cataloguing Grants Programme, the records of these hospitals recently underwent a comprehensive cataloguing project and we now know much more about the records held.

The seven hospitals are:

As you can probably tell from their names, some of these hospitals specialised in certain disciplines, and you can find out more about them within their individual pages. The project has brought to light many interesting documents, which had not previously been identified. They help to show the fascinating histories not only of the hospitals themselves, but also of the people who worked and were treated there. To that end they also provide a social history of an incredibly diverse area, and an understanding of how healthcare has developed from the 18th century to the present day.
