Trust Board

The Trust Board is accountable for setting the strategic direction of the Trust, monitoring performance against objectives, ensuring high standards of corporate governance and helping to promote links between the Trust and the local community.

The Board has 12 members – the Chairman, the Chief Executive, four full-time executive directors and six part-time non-executive directors.

Chairman

Stephen O’Brien, was confirmed as Chair of Barts and The London NHS Trust in November 2010 after serving in an interim capacity for the previous seven months. Stephen was previously Chair of NHS Tower Hamlets, is Vice President of Business in the Community and a former Chairman of London First, the influential business campaign group which works to support and shape London’s future. Stephen has lived in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets for 25 years.

Chief Executive

Peter Morris joined Barts and The London NHS Trust as Interim Chief Executive on 30 March 2009 and was appointed substantively to the role in October 2009. Prior to joining Barts and The London, he was Chief Executive of University Hospitals South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM) from 2002. He joined the NHS in 1979 and has held key leadership positions in hospitals in Kent, Sussex, Leicester, Cardiff and Sheffield and was Chief Executive at Ipswich Hospitals NHS Trust. He was awarded an OBE in 2008 for services to healthcare.

Non-Executive Directors

John Adshead has a degree in Economics and Politics from Exeter University and a MBA from Cranfield School of Management. He has spent his career in commerce and industry, starting as a graduate trainee in industrial relations at the Ford Motor Company in 1968. He joined the Bank of America in 1976 and became Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Information Technology and Administration for Europe, Middle East and Africa. He joined J Sainsbury plc in 1989, where he was Group Human Resources and Information Technology Director until 2004.

 

Ms Sally James
Non-executive Director

Sally James was appointed as a Non Executive Director of Barts and The London NHS Trust in February 2012, having been an Associate Non Executive Director of the Trust since October 2010. Sally is a lawyer who has spent most of her professional career in banking.  She is a Non Executive Director of UBS Limited and chairs the audit committee of the University of Sussex.  Sally chairs the Trust's Quality Assurance Committee.

 
Professor Richard Trebath

Non-executive Director

Richard Trembath, F Med Sci, took up the post as Vice Principal and Executive Dean (Health) of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in September 2011.  Prior to this appointment he was the Director of the NIHR Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Head of the KCL Division of Genetics & Molecular Medicine at King’s College London. He is an Honorary Consultant in Clinical Genetics at the Genetics Centre, at Guy’s Hospital.  He is a Senior Investigator for the National Institute of Health Research, a former Clinical Academic Group Lead within King’s Health Partners and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Professor Trembath serves on Advisory and Editorial Boards and Committees of numerous national and international journals and academic societies.  He is past President of The British Society of Human Genetics.

Abdal Ullah Mr Abdal Ullah
Non-executive Director

Abdal Ullah was appointed as a Non Executive Director of the Trust from 1 July 2009.  He has been a member of the Council of Queen Mary University of London since 2003.  He is currently Vice-Chair of the local Further Education College and a former member of the Education Commission with the Association of London Government.  He has extensive experience with a number of London’s strategic bodies and is a former member of the London Metropolitan Police Authority and Chair of the City of London Police Independent Advisory Committee.  He is currently a Trustee of Thames Water Trust. He was the convenor of the Home Office task group for Muslim youth in the aftermath of the 7 July 2005 London bomb attacks, has extensive involvement with many London voluntary organisations and is a trustee of the Centre of the Cell Ltd.  Currently an elected local authority councillor with cabinet responsibility for Policing, Transport and Environment, Abdal Ullah’s professional career experience includes working for one of the UK’s top consulting firm, where he worked across government departments on various projects, and working in the health, education and community development sectors.
Gautam Dala Non-executive Director Mr Gautam Dalal

Gautam Dalal, is a chartered accountant by profession, and a former senior audit partner with KPMG London.  From 2000 to 2003 he was Chairman and Chief Executive of the firm’s practice in India, which he helped to establish.  He is also a trustee of The National Gallery, where he chairs the Finance and Audit Committees, a member of the Audit Committee at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and Trustee and Treasurer of the health development organisation AMREF UK.  Previously he was a founder board member of the UK India Business Council, a member of the Asian Business Association Committee of the London Chamber of Commerce and Trustee and Treasurer of Panos London.

Philip Wright Mr Philip Wright
Non-executive Director

Philip Wright retired in December 2011 as partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He was responsible for some of PwC’s major advisory clients in the public and private sectors and for PwC’s services to non executive directors of the FTSE350.  From 1997 to 2003 he was first European then Global Leader for Corporate Finance and Recovery at PwC. He is a chartered accountant with a strong background in corporate finance and shareholder value.  He is a trustee of Common Purpose and a trustee of the Berlin British School. He is also Chairman of Digital Theatre and was formerly a Non Executive Director of NHS London.

Executive Directors

Toby Lewis - Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Mr Toby Lewis
Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive

Toby is the Trust's Chief Operating Officer. In this role he is accountable for all patient care services across our sites. He is also the Deputy Chief Executive. Toby has worked in the NHS for 15 years, in primary care and two other London teaching hospitals. He was the director responsible for the financial recovery of a large hospital Trust in Yorkshire. He is a graduate of the King's Fund Top Managers' Programme, London and Oxford universities. Toby joined the Trust in December 2009.

  Sarah Mussenden
Chief Financial Officer

Sarah is a Chartered Accountant who trained with Deloittes where she spent the first 10 Years of her career. She moved to British Airways PLC in 2001 initially as its Head of Internal Audit with a key achievement being the implementation of a global programme to improve governance and internal control. In 2005 she was appointed as Head of Finance for BA’s Terminal 5 Programme which she delivered below budget and despite its difficult start, achieved both a step change in BA’s operating cost base at Heathrow and in its customer satisfaction scores. Sarah’s last 3 years at BA were some of the most financially difficult times faced by the airline. As the Head of Finance for both the Customer and Operations divisions Sarah was instrumental in driving down its cost base and creating an airline wide business plan to restore economic viability. Sarah joined the Trust as its Chief Financial Officer in January 2011.

Kay Riley Ms Kay Riley
Chief Nurse

Kay began her NHS career in Nottingham, training as a nurse at the Nottingham School of Nursing, and held a number of nursing, then senior management positions at Queens Medical Centre, and Nottingham City Hospital over a period of 15 years. Kay then moved to the Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Trust initially as Deputy Director of Nursing, and then Acting Director of Nursing. In 2003, Kay moved to Southampton University Hospitals Trust initially as Associate Director of Nursing with a lead for modernisation, and then as Acting Director of Nursing, before taking up the post of Director of Nursing at Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare Trust for 3 years.

Dr Steve Ryan - Medical Director Dr Steve Ryan

Steve Ryan has been a consultant paediatrician since 1991.  He qualified in Leeds and subsequently trained in Leeds and Manchester, undertaking research into nutritional problems in premature babies.  As a general paediatrician he developed a special interest in the management of children with headaches and has been invited to speak at national events about his practice.  He won a national award for his headache practice in 2009.  He was Medical Director at the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for over 6 years prior to coming to Barts and The London, and was Acting Chief Executive for 5 months during that time.  Steve undertook a leading role in the NHS Next Stage Review in the North West and subsequently was seconded part-time to NHS North West as Deputy Medical Director and was a member of the NHS medical board at that time.  Steve joined Barts and The London in June 2010.  Steve is passionate about health prevention and promotion as part of his and his hospital’s work and has been on local and national media to demonstrate that passion.
