Barts and The London Urology Centre >> Our services >> Urinary infections
Urinary infections can affect the bladder and this is commonly known as cystitis. They can also affect the kidneys (known as pyelonephritis) or men’s testes (orchitits) and the prostate (prostatitis). These infections are usually caused by bacteria having entered through the urethra – this tends to be more common in females since the urethra is much shorter compared to the male. Urinary infections can sometimes be caused by bacteria entering the bloodstream (known as urosepsis).
Our team of urologist specialists will treat patients with severe urinary infections or frequently re-occurring infections that are not responding to treatment provided by the patient’s general practitioner. Patients staying with us in hospital will be given antibiotics by drip infusion and monitored by our ward nurses. If required, the urologist may also consider draining fluid from an infected area. Surgery may also be considered.
