Bringing Excellence to Life

ST 5, 6 & 7 (SpR 3, 4 & 5) Training

The aim of Higher and Advanced Level Training is to produce trainees competent for INDEPENDENT PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE in their chosen consultant career path.  To allow this to take place there is some degree of flexibility in the last three years of training consisting of the essential for completion of CCT and those choices which are optional depending on which consultant pathway you have chosen e.g. paediatric, obstetric, cardiac etc...

It is important that the CCT for Higher Training Level is read as it more complex than the Basic and the Intermediate.  It is also difficult to summarise and give it justice.  However there is a minimum which the School expects from trainees by the end of their ST7 (SpR 5):

  • 3 months of 1220 at the Royal London
  • 3 months Bart’s/Moorfields
  • 3 months Cardiac Anaesthesia
  • 3 months Paediatric Anaesthesia
  • 3 months District General Hospital experience

This is the bare minimum that is acceptable.  Of course there is much more opportunity for gaining more clinical experience in the School and the trainees are encouraged to gain as much as possible.

In addition to the clinical experience the following are expected to be achieved:

  • Management Course
  • Acute Paediatric Life Support (APLS)
  • Audit/Re-audits
  • Research Methodology/Research
  • Publications
  • Active involvement with the School/Deanery/College
  • Presentations at local and regional level

Once you have read the 'CCT in Anaesthesia' and there are any doubts please contact your Education Supervisor/College Tutor for further discussion.
