Academic Critical Care in the North-East Thames School of Anaesthesia

The Barts and the London School of Anaesthesia has close links with academic critical care which is based within the William Harvey Research Institute (www.whri.qmul.ac.uk) at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary's, University of London.

Research

We have an active critical care research programme which includes a number of clinical and laboratory translational research projects as well as applied health services research and industry sponsored pharmaceutical trials. We have particular interests in genomics and the cardiovascular management of the critically ill. This work has particular relevance to patients undergoing major surgery, those suffering from severe sepsis and victims of major trauma. We supervise a number of MD/PhD students both from within the School and further a field. Our team also includes a small number of visiting research fellows who join us for shorter periods from around the world. Those interested in undertaking research in the field of critical care are encouraged to visit Charles Hinds or Rupert Pearse.

Teaching

We have an active undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme, delivering parts of the medical curriculum in clinical medicine, intercalated BSc and MSc courses. Clinicians from Barts and The London School of Anaesthesia are also involved with speciality training and examination in Intensive Care Medicine. We run a popular Clinical Research Methodology Course every autumn which aims to introduce staff from various backgrounds to the principles of clinical research.
