About us
Barts and The London Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Centre is based at two of our hospitals; The Royal London in Whitechapel and St Bartholomew’s (known as Barts) by St Paul’s in the city.
About oral and maxillofacial surgery
Oral and maxillofacial surgery ('maxillo' refers to the jaws) is a branch of surgery with roots in medicine and dentistry and which deals with diseases of the mouth, jaws and face and important structures in the area such as the salivary glands and the temporomandibular joints (i.e. the jaw joints). Oral and maxillofacial surgery (sometimes also called 'maxfac' or 'maxfax' for short) is a highly intricate area, which is important both functionally and cosmetically.
Our specialists
Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons have a dental surgical (FDS) as well as medical surgical (FRCS) qualifications (so called 'doubly qualified') together with the appropriate postgraduate professional surgical qualifications (Fellowship of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons).

Multidisciplinary service
Our maxillofacial specialists work in multi-disciplinary teams to provide a seamless approach to treating patients with disorders to their mouth and gums, ears nose and throat and eyes. It is essential that we work side-by-side with dental hospital specialists, ear nose and throat (ENT) and ophthalmic surgeons to provide the highest standards of care and best patient outcomes. We also work closely with our cancer specialists to care for people who require surgery following oral, head and neck cancer.
