Eye cancer
We provide one of only three services in England able to treat adult eye cancer and we care for around half of all patients in England who are diagnosed with eye melanoma.
We are the only centre in Britain that manages both adult and child eye tumours. The service accepts referrals from other hospitals all over the country, with about 20 new referrals received each week.
Uveal tract melanoma comprises the majority of cases treated. There are about 500-600 new cases of this type of eye cancer diagnosed each year in England and we treat about half of these cases. We also manage and treat uveal tract metastases, epibulbar tumours including conjunctival lymphoma, conjunctival melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and associated conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia.
Treatments available
The treatments and equipment used by the ocular oncology centre are at the forefront of modern healthcare. For example, we use:
- High specification ultrasonography and digital photography in clinics and theatres which provide detailed imagery of the eye.
- Technology to record, store and access images immediately, enabling faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment.
- A new I3 B-scan ultrasound machine, which enables us to detect changes within the eye as a patient goes through their treatment.
We have first class dedicated clinics, theatres and imaging support to conduct MRI and CT scans all on one site, providing a seamless approach to patient care. If required, our onsite anaesthesia support and access to intensive care beds allow for more specialist and individual care.
